[i]marstokyo: Bring it on

Ben is en route home, having called from San Diego. He gets in tonight around 8:20pm.

Tomorrow I'm making a coming home feast for him and inviting as many of his friends who can come.

Right now two pecan pies (with chocolate liners) are in the oven. Tonight I'll make up Spinach Gnocci. Tomorrow I'll roast the turkey, make carrot/cashew soup, yeast raised rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy and there will be drinks for all. (plus pumpkin, in addition to the pecan pie)

Thanksgiving is about abundance--BOUNTY-- It's about starches and thick gravy and sweets, and abundance. Don't spare the butter. And don't even THINK of putting out non-fat margarine!

Fresh (not frozen) turkeys were .49 a lb today!

[i]luciddreams: Stuff that I'm super thankful for

- My best friend and wife, who I love more than life - Kelly

- My Aunt - For too many reasons to count

- My Dad and his healthy life in southern Oregon, I miss him terribly sometimes, but I'm so glad he's doing well

- My Brother - A strong, smart awesome old man, who I also miss terribly

- My Big Sister - Who happens to be married to my brother - I'm thankful that she takes such good care of him, and he of her.

- My in-laws - some of the most supportive people you'll ever meet, despite the occasional hiccups between Kelly and them. :D

- The people in my life who, despite long periods of separation remain the strongest and most devout friends. You know who you are.

- This F-list, which include some of the people in the bullet just before this

- My job - that I can help people - for as much as it's worth. Stable and well paying, despite the god-awful location

- The few friends we've made in Binghamton, they're good people, and I hope to get to know them better

- The good food in Binghamton - I gotta say, despite it's poor qualities, it almost makes up for it here

- My brain - I put myself down sometimes, but my intelligence and wit have gotten me this far in life, so I guess it's not all that bad. Could use SOME improvement, though. We are who we are and it's the only chance we have, unless you believe in reincarnation...

- My health - I'm truly blessed here. I get sick maybe once every three years. It lasts a day, usually a day and a half. Then bam. I'm better.

- My Kitties. Franklin with his heart filled with Murder, and Saranac - the perfect cat

- And it's unfortunate that it sounds corny to say this, but I'm thankful to be born in America. It's the only place that I know. And despite the (sometimes stupid) stigma that people associate with being patriotic, I am proud to be an American.

- There's miscellaneous stuff, but I can thank all those in private. ;)

So Happy Turkey day to you guys, my buds. Hope it's going well/went well for all of you.

~Alan

[i]inmyblueheaven posting in [i]naturalmed: Natural Cancer Treatments?

A friend's wife was diagnosed with cancer nearly a year ago. He is having a hard time dealing with it, so I haven't asked many questions, and I'm not sure what type of cancer it is..

So with that said, any information or experiences with natural cancer treatments would be much appreciated and will be passed on to them. Happy Holidays and thank you in advance.

[i]marstokyo: New Ganges in progress

[i]marstokyo: Back to work

Sunday I finished up a coastline that had been left unfinished because of the studio rehab. And yesterday I began work on a second "Mouths of the Ganges River* -- having sold the first one.

I didn't look at pictures of the first one. I just started over with the atlas, and it's interesting how different it is. I could do a whole series just on the Ganges, it's so fluted and detailed.

It's great getting back to work. I've missed it so much.
Tomorrow is the blasted interruption of T-day--and driving down to Bethesda--but Friday's good. And Ben comes home that evening. YAAAY!!

[i]anghelmahal posting in [i]cynical_nurse: about to become "one of them"!!!

Hello to the most wonderful nursing group ever.

I am faced with a daunting event in my short nursing career. . . .the opportunity to enter management. I've been a nurse for 5 1/2 years and a hospice nurse for 2 1/2 of them. I was approached two weeks ago by our assistant director asking if I was interested in pursuing a job as nurse manager. I will be honest in saying that I had never considered it prior to that. It always seemed a job that everyone gets stressed out because of, and you are faced with inordinate amounts of needs with not enough staff to fill them, thus everyone becomes cranky. Not interested in cranky people.

However, I do have to say that the organization I work for right now is really exceptional at taking care of their nurses. I feel like our needs are really heard and that management puts forth a serious effort to support the staff and make sure we feel appreciated. I love hospice and I truly believe in the work that we do. I also think that the people I work with are really exceptional.

This doesn't mean that our organization doesn't have its shortcomings, just as any other place.

I interviewed for the position late last week and am currently waiting to hear back. It seems that the director and assistant director of the hospice feel that I have good qualities to be a nurse manager (something they told me outright). I feel a little nervous just because I'm fairly new to the field and am a fairly young nurse. I do think those two things can work for or against me, depending on how I choose to use them.

So my question to all of you cynics out there is. . . .for anyone in management, do you have any recommendations for getting into management, or suggestions for someone new to management? I don't want to become "one of them" as it were. And for seasoned staff nurses, what is something I need to avoid at all costs if I become a manager?

Thanks all :)

[i]luciddreams: (no subject)

Supposedly gamefly says they shipped Dragon Age on friday. I guess we'll see whether it's there tonight. Though I'll probably spend the better part of the evening catching up with and watching the newest episode of House M.D.

Also, I'm thinking I'll probably do some ironing, and house cleaning. Plus the dishes need doing. I need something to stay occupied with while Kelly's away.

After that I think I'll write a little and try to crank out a few chapters of Red Seas Under Red Skies. I'll probably finish Game of Thrones at work sometime this week, hopefully.

Anyway. Slight update - better than the facebook mini-updates.

[i]rotte_volf posting in [i]progressivenews: Declaration of Sunland sovereignty.

Despite the enormous potential of knowledge and technologies, humanity is faced with challenges that threaten its very existence. Scarcity and exhaustion of natural resources, the threat of world war, global climate change - these and other risks make us look to the future with alarm. More and more people around the Globe realize that the only way to change things for the better is to change our world-view approaches, changing of our thinking.

Motivated by the desire to contribute to new thinking of mankind, people of goodwill from every corner of the world have united around the Sunland idea. Relying on the natural right of people to be masters of their own fate, like all other nations, in their own sovereign State,

WE, MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL OF AUTHORIZED PERSONS, REPRESENTATIVES OF SUNLAND COMMUNITY AND SUNLAND WORLDWIDE MOVEMENT, BY VIRTUE OF OUR NATURAL RIGHT AND ON THE STRENGTH OF INTERNATIONAL LEGAL ACTS (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Declaration on Principles of International Law, etc.), HEREBY DECLARE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SOVEREIGN STATE - THE REPUBLIC OF SUNLAND ON THE TERRITORY OF PETER I ISLAND IN THE BELLINGSHAUSEN SEA IN ANTARCTIC.

We know that the Kingdom of Norway is asserting its territorial claims to the island. However, these claims are unfounded from the standpoint of international law. Peter I Island was discovered on January 10, 1821 by Fabian von Bellingshausen, Russia’s Admiral. Only 108 years later the Norwegians landed on it. They were searching for new waters for whaling; rumors were that there should be a lot of whales in the ocean around this desolate and unknown island. Therefore, Lars Christensen, Norwegian ship-owner and whaling magnate was the organizer of that expedition. However, the Norwegian richman and killer of the whales lost his interest because of lack of whales in the surrounding waters. Then, within 80 years, Norway has failed to implement the development of the island and it is currently uninhabited. The island is situated at the other end of the Globe, many thousands miles off the coast of Norway.

According to Article IV of the Antarctic Treaty: "No acts or activities taking place while the present Treaty is in force shall constitute a basis for asserting, supporting or denying a claim to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica or create any rights of sovereignty in Antarctica. No new claim, or enlargement of an existing claim, to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica shall be asserted while the present Treaty is in force". However, this treaty points to territorial claims of existing States, which are already recognized by the international community (as it indicated by the very meaning of the term "claim"). But we are creating a new nation. We fully support the principles of the Antarctic Treaty - freedom of scientific research and equitable international cooperation in Antarctica, the demilitarization of the Antarctic region and its use for peaceful purposes for the benefit of all mankind.

The Republic of Sunland is based on the principles of freedom, justice and peace; it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights for everyone irrespective of religion, race or sex; it guarantees freedom of conscience, language, education and culture; and it will respect universally recognized norms of international law.

We extend our hand to all states and their peoples in an offer of peace and good neighbourliness, and appeal to them to establish bonds of cooperation and mutual help with the Republic of Sunland. The Republic of Sunland is prepared to do its share in a common effort for the exploration of the Antarctic Region.

Following the procedures of the Antarctic Treaty, we intend to organize an expedition on Peter I Island and arrange a settlement there.

According to the will of the people of Sunland the Secretariat for External Relations is authorized to represent the country in the world.

With faith in the bright future of all mankind, we affix our signatures to this Declaration at the meeting of the Council of authorized persons, in the twenty-third day of November, in the year two thousand and nine.

[i]ashby_team posting in [i]naturalmed: Fibromyalgia -- Nearly all gone!

I have a very close friend of the family named Georgette. She is 64 years old and suffering from severe fibromyalgia. She was introduced to this all natural supplement that fights off free radicals and protects each and every single cell in her body. She was introduced by a medical doctor out of Ottawa Canada, where i'm from:)

Anyways within the first 2 days Georgette was noticing something weird happening. The inflammation at the cellular level was going down and she was having much less pain in her hands, feet, and back! Within the next 2 weeks her pain was about 90% gone and she has way more energy than before. She opened up to me the other day and cried for a long period of time talking about how its changed her life so dramatically. If you know anybody with arthritis, fibromyalgia, common aches and pains, low energy levels and would like to try a 1-week supply for free please contact me. I am giving this stuff out for people to see that it really does work for anybody and it can change lives, even if you are healthy! Add me as a friend and I would love to share with you more testimonials.

Thank-you for reading and I hope this can inspire many.

[i]raptorgirl posting in [i]naturalmed: Ear Problems, Round 2

I posted a few days ago asking for help with a probable ear infection. The suggestions were appreciated, but I wound up having to go to the walk-in clinic because it just wasn't getting better. Turns out it wasn't an ear infection, but a "wall" of wax blocking my ear. I got some over-the-counter drops to dissolve the earwax. They did their job and stopped the pain, but now I have another problem:

The earwax is soft, but it's still jammed in my ear. It's in so deep that it's plugged my ear up. When I try to tug on my ear to pop it, I get a second of clear hearing followed by a sucking sound, and then it's back to being plugged-up.

How do I get this stuff out of my ear once and for all? I've heard of ear candling, but I've never tried it before and am a little leery.

[i]marstokyo: Adjustment for practical reasons

I pushed the center tables over into an EL from the work bench. Mainly for lighting reasons. I bought this nice verilux work light (won't need to replace florescent tubes in the overheads) --but nothing will clamp onto the brown wood tables because of the rounded lip to the table top. So I clamped the light to the work bench and moved the table under it. Since I'm not hanging blinds until next summer, I used a paper parasol to shade the table from direct sunlight while I work.

Moving the tables over like this actually opens the room up even more, though it creates more of a mass of surfaces on the left side of the room and is less symmetrically balanced. The main thing, though, is it works for working.

Lupé likes it.
